In 1973, Prof. V. Khavinson first introduced the term "Epithalamin" to describe a polypeptide extract isolated from the bovine pineal gland. The discovery of this extract's bioactivity and its initial investigations were conducted by Russian scientists Prof. V.Khavinson and Prof. V.Anisimov. Since then, Epithalamin has been extensively studied, including in clinical trials, demonstrating a normalizing effect on core functions of the human body and establishing itself as a potent geroprotective agent. Epithalamin functions as a natural peptide complex that regulates hormonal balance, supports the immune system and directly influences melatonin levels.

Based on the amino acid composition of Epithalamin, a synthetic short analogue (tetrapeptide) Epitalon was created with the following sequence: Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly (AEDG). While the human body naturally produces very small quantities of this peptide, its endogenous presence remained unconfirmed for many years. It was not until 2017 that Epitalon was first detected within the physiological extract of the pineal gland.

Epitalon and Epithalamin were both discovered and thoroughly researched at the St. Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology under the leadership of V. Khavinson. Research shows that short peptides synthesized based on the amino acid profile of polypeptide complexes from various organs can modulate immune responses and significantly extend the lifespan of experimental animals (Khavinson, 2003; Khavinson, 2005). These synthetic short peptides retain all the properties of natural peptide bioregulators. However, they exert their specific effects at significantly lower concentrations compared to crude peptide extracts (Khavinson, 2012). One of that compounds is the short peptide Epitalon (Anisimov, 2010). Epitalon exhibits properties similar to Epithalamin but differs in the intensity of certain actions.
