ACETYL-CYSTEINE also known as N-acetylcysteine (NAC), is a medication that is used to treat paracetamol overdose and to loosen thick mucus in individuals with chronic bronchopulmonary disorders like pneumonia and bronchitis.
Acetylcysteine was initially patented in 1960 and came into medical use in 1968. It is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines. It is available as a generic medication.
Acetylcysteine is a mucolytic, expectorant, and antioxidant agent. It is used for infectious diseases that may be accompanied by the formation of viscous sputum that is difficult to separate, including respiratory diseases of the upper and lower respiratory tract. Action:
Acetylcysteine is a derivative of the amino acid cysteine. It has a mucolytic effect, facilitates sputum discharge, directly affecting the rheological properties of sputum. The mucolytic effect is due to the ability of the drug to break the disulfide bonds of mucopolysaccharide chains and cause depolymerization of sputum mucoproteins. It has an antioxidant effect, which is based on the ability of its reactive sulfhydryl groups (SH-groups) to bind to oxidizing radicals, neutralizing them. Promotes the synthesis of glutathione, an important component of the antioxidant system and chemical detoxification of the body.
Due to the antioxidant action, the anti-inflammatory property of acetylcysteine is also realized - the antioxidant effect of acetylcysteine increases the protection of cells from the damaging effects of free radical oxidation, which is characteristic of an intense inflammatory reaction. The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of acetylcysteine are especially important in ARVI with high fever and influenza.
