5-HTP (5-Hydroxytryptophan), also known as hydroxytriptan, is an amino acid found in proteins. It is a precursor of the neurotransmitter serotonin. It is also an intermediate in the metabolism of tryptophan, one of the most important amino acids. HTP-5 is a natural amino acid found in a West African plant that is used as a dietary supplement in place of tryptophan. Often, 5-HTP is used in combination with vitamin B6 and is suggested for use in combating stress and increasing serotonin levels. The usual regimen for taking 5-hydroxytryptophan is 100 mg twice a day. 5-HTP is used as a dietary supplement, and is not registered in any state as a medicine.
