Androgenetic alopecia is the most common type of hair loss in both men and women. Baldness occurs in a large percentage of adults and progresses with age. Many researchers believe that intracellular Wnt signaling pathways are responsible for hair follicle development and hair regeneration in humans.

There are three components of a possible approach for the treatment of alopecia. Microneedle wounds stimulate follicle formation, valproic acid activates a cellular pathway associated with follicle development, and the PTD-DBM peptide prevents the CXXC5 protein from negatively interfering with follicle development. Studies have shown that PTD-DBM is significantly more effective in stimulating hair regeneration when combined with valproic acid when applied topically.
